What is a Black Forest Cake?

Black Forest Cake is a classic German dessert. It is made with layers of chocolate cake, cream or custard, and cherries. The distinctive feature of this cake is the dark chocolate pieces and swirls of whipped cream that decorate the top of the cake. The name “Black Forest” originates from the region in Germany where it was first created. This area, located just south of Frankfurt, was known for its dark forests and plentiful cherry trees. The modern version of the Black Forest cake was first served in 1915 by a hotel in Berlin.
