An egg roll is a popular Chinese-American appetizer or snack consisting of a savory filling wrapped in a thin pastry wrapper, which is then typically deep-fried until crispy. The filling often includes ingredients such as shredded cabbage, carrots, bean sprouts, minced meat (such as pork or chicken), and sometimes mushrooms or bamboo shoots, seasoned with various spices like garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and sesame oil.

The pastry wrapper is made from a mixture of flour, water, and sometimes egg, rolled out thinly and then filled with the prepared mixture before being folded into a cylindrical shape and sealed at the edges.

The name “egg roll” can be somewhat misleading as the traditional Chinese version doesn’t always contain egg in the wrapper; however, in Western versions, egg is often included in the wrapper mixture. Once assembled, the egg roll is then deep-fried until golden brown and crispy, resulting in a deliciously crunchy exterior with a flavorful, tender filling inside. It’s often served with dipping sauces such as sweet and sour sauce, plum sauce, or spicy mustard for added flavor.
