Making a calzone is simple and fun! It’s like a pizza folded into a pocket, with customizable fillings. Here’s a straightforward recipe:
Ingredients
For the dough (or use pre-made pizza dough):
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 1 cup warm water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
For the filling:
- 1 cup ricotta cheese
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
- ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated
- ½ cup marinara sauce (optional inside or served on the side)
- Your choice of toppings (pepperoni, cooked sausage, mushrooms, spinach, peppers, onions)
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
1. Make the Dough (Skip if Using Pre-made)
- In a small bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- In a large bowl, mix the flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
- Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with a damp towel and let rise for 1 hour, or until doubled.
2. Prepare the Fillings
- In a bowl, mix the ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan, and Italian seasoning.
- Set your favorite toppings nearby.
3. Shape the Calzone
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces for individual calzones. Roll each piece into a circle about 8-10 inches wide.
- Spread some cheese mixture on one half of the dough, leaving a 1-inch border. Add any toppings you like.
- If you want marinara inside, add a spoonful on top of the filling.
4. Seal the Calzone
- Fold the other half of the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape.
- Press the edges together, then fold them inward and crimp tightly.
- Brush the top with egg wash for a golden finish (optional). Cut a small slit or two on top to release steam.
5. Bake
- Place calzones on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
6. Serve
- Let the calzone cool for a few minutes before cutting.
- Serve with extra marinara on the side for dipping.
Enjoy your delicious, customizable calzone! 😊
