A French dip sandwich is deliciously simple! Here’s a classic recipe:
Ingredients:
- For the Sandwich:
- 1-2 lbs roast beef, thinly sliced (deli roast beef works great if you don’t want to cook your own roast)
- 4 hoagie rolls or French rolls, split open
- 4 slices of provolone or Swiss cheese (optional)
- Butter, for toasting rolls
- For the Au Jus (Dipping Sauce):
- 3 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Prepare the Au Jus:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Bring to a simmer over medium heat for about 5 minutes. Taste and adjust seasonings with salt and pepper if needed.
- Reduce heat to low and keep warm.
- Prepare the Sandwiches:
- Butter the cut sides of the hoagie rolls. In a skillet over medium heat, toast the rolls until golden brown.
- Place a slice of cheese (if using) on each roll.
- Warm the sliced roast beef by adding it to the simmering au jus for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, until just heated through. Use tongs to lift the beef from the sauce and pile it onto the rolls.
- Serve:
- Pour the au jus into individual small bowls for dipping.
- Serve each sandwich with a bowl of au jus, and enjoy dipping each bite into the flavorful broth!
French dips are great with sides like coleslaw, potato chips, or a green salad. Enjoy!
