Making homemade bread is both satisfying and straightforward! Here’s a basic recipe for a classic loaf of white bread:
Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for kneading)
- 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 ½ cups warm water (110°F, warm to the touch)
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
- 1 ½ tsp salt
Instructions:
- Activate the Yeast:
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water and sugar, then sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until it’s foamy (this means the yeast is activated and ready).
- Mix the Dough:
- Add the olive oil (or melted butter) and salt to the yeast mixture. Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. Once the dough starts pulling away from the sides of the bowl, it’s ready to be kneaded.
- Knead the Dough:
- Lightly flour a surface, then turn the dough out onto it. Knead the dough for 8-10 minutes, until it’s smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour as needed.
- First Rise:
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1 to 1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Shape the Dough:
- Punch down the risen dough to release air, then turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Shape it into a loaf by flattening it into a rectangle and rolling it tightly. Pinch the seam closed and tuck the ends under.
- Second Rise:
- Place the shaped dough into a greased loaf pan. Cover and let it rise again for 30-45 minutes, until it has risen above the edge of the pan.
- Bake:
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes, until it’s golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
- Cool:
- Let the bread cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Once cooled, slice and enjoy your homemade bread!
