What is an APPLE DUMPLING?

An apple dumpling is a baked pastry made with apples, cinnamon, sugar, and butter. It’s the perfect fall treat! Serve it warm with ice cream or caramel sauce for an extra special dessert.

APPLE DUMPLINGS

For the dough:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 cup sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the filling:

6-8 cups apples, peeled and cut into small pieces (I like to use a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples)

1/2 cup sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

For the topping:

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted

1/2 cup sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

To make the dough: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream butter and sugar together until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs, one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add in the dry ingredients until just combined.

To make the filling: In a large bowl, mix together apples, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

To assemble: Roll out dough on a floured surface to 1/4-inch thickness. Using a biscuit cutter or glass, cut out circles of dough. Place a heaping tablespoon of filling in the center of each circle, then fold the dough over the filling and press the edges to seal. Place dumplings on prepared baking sheet.

To make the topping: In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, sugar, and cinnamon. Brush over the top of each dumpling.

Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown. Serve warm with ice cream or caramel sauce. Enjoy!
